GNZ Newsletter February 2024

From the president

Welcome to the February 2024 GNZ newsletter.

Isn't this a great time of year.

The weather (unless you're at a National Gliding Champs!) is amazing.

Tasks are being done.

Goals are being achieved.

Gliders are being flown (and landed out).

Retrieve adventures are being had.

New members are joining and feeling the buzz.

BBQ's and cooling refreshments are being consumed.

Tall stories of how it was done are being told.

What more could you want?

Steve Wallace

GNZ President

Congratulations

BEN POLASCHEK

First solo, age 14 and it was a 1 hour 40 min soaring flight. What a great start to his soaring journey.

Also GNZ's first solo of the year on the 2nd Jan.

STEPHANIE REDENPENNING

First Solo! Well done Stephanie!

And second GNZ solo of the year on 4th Jan.

JAY ZHING

First solo. Well done Jay! 3rd GNZ solo of the year...

JASMINE RILEY

For those that remember, Jasmine went solo in a glider at the Matamata Youth Camp in December. So in January (after just missing her power solo at the Walsh due to Covid) she did her power solo a few days later at the Tauranga aero-club. A future glider pilot and tow pilot. Way to go Jasmine!

GEORGIA SCHOFIELD & HUGO CORBILLE

On the 2nd day of the year an epic 604km thermal flight from Drury of 8hrs 9mins

MARLEY KUYS (left) & BEN GAMBARO (right)

Solo Pilot Certificate for Marley and Soaring Pilot Certificate for Ben.

NORBERT SCARLAT & JUSTIN WILLS

These two have been at it again. This time a predeclared 1,000km flight on Jan 15th using thermals only, which is unusual for the South Island.

You can read more about the flight on WeGlide

ROSS GADDES

FAI NZ Rep Liz King & FAI President of Honour Bob Henderson present Ross Gaddes with a Paul Tissandier Diploma, one of the FAI's most prestigious awards.

Is gliding a religion?

Solomon Taputoro

Omarama Xmas Camp

Canterbury Gliding Club

I was reading Solomon Taputoro's report on the Canterbury Gliding Clubs Xmas Camp at Omarama and very much enjoyed his epiphany that gliding may actually be a religion.

I relaxed in the Cathedral roofed Terminal building from the heat of the day. It still felt like an airport terminal building, but now thinking back over the past two weeks, I was intrigued to notice a religious overtone permeating its façade. From the past weeks observations I noticed . . .

  • An annual pilgrimage for the devoted many to the gliding Mecca of NZ √ check
  • Grand Iconic symbols hanging from the ceiling and wall plaques memorialising past revered champions of the faith √ check
  • Layman of differing denominations (glider, para, hang, power) . . . we shan’t mention the heretical whirly pilots 😀 √ check
  • 0930 Clergy/Elders meetings (Gate keepers of the ancient wisdom) √ check
  • 1000 Morning liturgical services in the congregational hall √ check
  • Scriptural readings of wisdom by Milan from the sacred texts (apps) √ check
  • Impromptu pastoral sermons by a man everyone called “G” who coincidently flies the rego Golf Oscar Delta. √ check
  • The Ritualistic way in which they prepare their machines for the day every morning √ check
  • A youth group √ check

I couldn’t help but wonder, what is this strange religion I’ve stumbled into? I wonder if they even realise 😀

GNZ EVENTS SUMMARY

Club Class Nationals - Papawai

07-15 February 2024

Entries will be closing on Sunday 7th January.

If you wish to fly the Club Class Nationals please enter by 7th January as we may not be able to accommodate you if you decide to turn up on the field expecting to enter.

Due to the moderate number of entries we have decided that all launching will be with our Skylaunch dual drum winch.

Only a couple of pilots are not winch rated and we will have a towplane available for them and also for Club Class if we need to tow pilots to lift sources. On most occasions at Papawai you can get away with 2kms of the airfield in summer.

Winch launching at Papawai is up to 2000-2300ft and we can keep costs down for competitors by launching this way.

This is the last call for entries. Please enter before Sunday 7th January which will help with our planning.

Club Class Nationals being held at Papawai Airstrip in Greytown next 07-15 February followed by the Central Districts at Waipukurau 2 days later.

Two competitions in two locations in two weeks….twice the fun.

If you are intending to come and fly the friendly Wairarapa skies we need you to enter by January 7th so we can plan an awesome even. Entries are now open at:

Youth Soaring Development Camp - Omarama

by Roger Read

YSDC Omarama report

The camp went well…we had 7 days of flying but some strong westerlies curtailed flying on a couple of days.Using just 5 gliders, 7 Instructors, 3 winch drivers and 6 adult helpers, we did 188 winch launches during the camp and the 15 students flew 65 hours with all progressing well and many achieving “personal goals” they had set.

For Anna Green, it was her first time above 10,000 ft and using Oxygen;

for Raven Burhenne it was his first Single Seat conversion

For Ted McFadgen it was his first Single Seat conversion as well.

MultiClass Nationals - Taupo

MultiClass Nationals

With the help of Jasper the dog Bob Henderson as Contest Director did a sterling job herding the contest pilots into a semblance of ordered chaos. Bob even brought back contest finishes and despite an almost hour long briefing on how to do them correctly and what radio calls to make some pilots still managed to earn themselves warnings.

Unfortunately the weather did not really co-operate. Including the practice day, out of a possible 10 days of flying, only four were flown and even those days were somewhat fickle and tricky. The Open Class only managed two 1,000 point days and in the Racing Class, no 1,000 point days were achieved. Hence you will notice the unusually low scores of the champions. Just getting over the start line was a challenge on some of the days but on every day at least one or two pilots in both classes did get around the tasks, even if it was for zero points sometimes!

Link to all the results: GNZ MultiClass Nationals

Winner of the Racing Class was Mark Wilson with a grand total of 1,503 points.

Winner of the Open Class was Keith Essex with a grand total of 2,681 points. No photo of Keith because he got the night of the final dinner wrong and didn't turn up. Lol!

Winner of the most meritorious flight was David Moody on day 2 for taking 6 hours 36 minutes to complete the 234km task at a speed of just 35km/hr. Most land outs had been retrieved before Dave finally got home. What amazing persistence on a very difficult day!

Membership

Membership Display Panel

Ah, the sweet summer sounds of an off-the-clock vario indicating things are going up nicely. So plus 12 members for the month which is great. We still however have a long way to go to get back to the height we started the year at. So the altimeter still has us 41 feet / members under for the year. Please keep on inviting those friends that show an interest when you explain what you do and why you like it so much!

GNZ Umbrella Trust

A request to bequest

The GNZ Umbrella Trust has been particularly busy recently with loans for the purchase of new aircraft for the Omarama Gliding Club, the Canterbury Gliding Club, Piako Gliding Club and the Auckland Gliding Club as well as providing grants to Michael Strathern to support his attendance at the World Gliding Champ's and grants to a number of other pilots and courses that result in progression in gliding and the achievement of goals. A summary of recent grants can be found here.

The trust is able to do this due to the generous capital base received from individuals and organisations over the years. These can be viewed here.

The trust would however love to be able to better support even more clubs and pilots and to do this we need to keep growing the capital base as it is the returns from the base that provides the money for grants.

The Umbrella Trust therefore humbly asks that if you have a desire to leave an on-going legacy, in your name or anonymously, that you consider a bequest in your will to the Umbrella Trust.

For a confidential discussion you may contact the trustees via the trust secretary, Jan Rae.

Visiting Foreign Pilots and Instructors

Before VFP's or VFI's fly at your club

A recent incident has highlighted that not all clubs are aware of what is required before a visiting foreign pilot (VFP) or a visiting foreign instructor (VFI) can fly or instruct at your club. To make this very clear the foreign pilot flow chart has been updated (see below). For the flying to be legal and possibly your clubs aircraft insurance valid, you must ensure all the right checks have been done and the 'paperwork' has been correctly filled in and filed. VFP and VFI are just GNZ membership categories, they do not infer that the pilots are qualified or legal to fly in NZ.

Further info can be found on the GNZ website: https://gliding.co.nz/pilots/overseas-visiting-pilots/
