GNZ Newsletter November 2025

From the president

Welcome to November

And we are off and running...

Or flying as the case may be.

Despite the changeable weather that Spring may bring,

Cross-country flying is now a thing.

Thermals, ridge and wave,

Snow, wind, rain and sun,

Something for everyone.

The first 1,000km flight of the season had been done.

Congrats to Felix and Justin for 1,138km and well done John Smith on 987km in his LS3a.

First land outs at the Matamata Cross Country course,

And a Silver Badge completed.

We're only just getting warmed up.

Here's to a big season ahead.

Cheers

Upcoming Events

Enter now, even if tentative to help the organisers to organise.

MSC Task Week

MSC is hosting a week long, soaring task week in November at Matamata Soaring Centre. This is for pilots that want a week of task flying with others without the formal competition pressure.

This is not intended to be a training course but there will be coaching and pair or group flying. So for those experienced pilots joining us, you may be asked to share your knowledge and experience with newer pilots.

It’s expected that pilots will come with their own glider to fly and be qualified to fly XCP. We will have a couple of dual gliders available if pilots want to share a flight and fly with a cross-country coach.

Weather and task briefing each day at 10:00am with a range of tasks set to suit those pilots entering. We hope to satisfy a range of abilities from short local tasks through to long distance (gold and diamond and above) tasks.

Entry form is open on GNZ Events page or by clicking the link below.

https://msc.gliding.net.nz/events/msc-task-week-nov-2025

Entries are not compulsory, we will take casual day entries, but if you’re travelling and intend to stay at Matamata for the week, then it would be for us to know you’re coming. Also helps us with tow plane planning.

South Island Regionals

South Island Regionals

Omarama – Sat 15th Nov 2025 - Sat 22nd Nov 2025

This is a great opportunity for newer pilots to get a taste of competition flying at one of the worlds best soaring sites. Fly in your own or a club single or scout out an opportunity to get a day or even a whole comp in one of the many twins that will be there. Auckland Gliding Club has their Duo GQQ entered and will be looking to fill seats, Charlie Irvin, Amy Smith and Tuulianna Laukkanen are entered as a team in Twin Astir GOR, 15 year old Ben Sly from Whenuapai will be flying with GNZ President Nigel Davy in Duo GNS. Omarama Gliding Club have twins available, Canterbury have twins that should enter, Kahu Soaring has twins...

Make yourself known to one of these clubs if you want to experience mountain racing in a glider because you might find that all you have to do is ask.

To help inspire you here is an awesome little video by Tobias Read.

Auckland Soaring Competition

Auckland Soaring Competition

NZ National Club Class Competition

Drury – 3rd to 10th Jan 2026

“Two competitions with a difference” – one based loosely on the Competition Enterprise format. The other – Club Class – will be a fully GNZ sanctioned competition using the current GNZ rules.

Auckland Gliding Club’s application to host the NZ Club Class Nationals event was accepted at the last GNZ AGM. The AGC is super excited to offer a premium competition aimed directly to suit those people who enjoy the challenge and real spirit of flying Club Class aircraft.

The annual Auckland Soaring Competition has become a go to for many pilots who want to fly alongside others, challenge themselves and have FUN.

We want all pilots, friends – including partners and family to enjoy these two soaring events – with a difference.

ENTER NOW – GNZ Website

Note – details on fees and costs will be sorted soon – however we want to gauge support for these two competitions in order to organise our support systems and people.

Make sure your FLARM, Oudie N and SeeYou Navigator are configured correctly for the season.

Here's a simple checklist to make sure you've got it right.

1) Find your designated ADSB hex code for your aircraft:https://www.aviation.govt.nz/aircraft/aircraft-registration/aircraft-register-search/It's the code after "HEX" e.g. "HEXA1B2C3" = A1B2C3

2) Make sure any FLARM devices in your aircraft are broadcasting as that same hex code. Sometimes they are configured already to match. Sometimes they are the random number assigned when the FLARM was purchased. They have a config file on the SD card OR are configured in software (e.g. in your LX9000).

3) The Oudie hex codes *for each aircraft you fly* should also match the aircraft ADSB hex code. Instructions here:https://puretrack.io/help/navigatorBe sure to select the correct aircraft anytime you fly, especially if you fly club aircraft often.

4) Each aircraft's hex code should be in the OGN database, so all the tracking sites can link it to your aircraft:http://wiki.glidernet.org/ddbBoth PureTrack and gliding.net.nz use this.

5) It should also be in the FLARMNet database, so physical devices (like Oudies or LX9000's) know who is who:https://www.flarmnet.org

6) Finally check your SPOT, InReach or Zoleo are configured correctly on both PureTrack and gliding.net.nz

Simple! Not really, but it only has to be configured correctly once...

What has V.K. been up to?

The main events occurring within Vintage Kiwi during October has been the completion of the annuals on the club's K-13 GFX in time for Labour Weekend. GFX flew on two of those days with some great flights over on the Kaimai Range. Thanks are due to Derry Belcher for completing the work in good time. He also adjusted the front control column, rear dive brake lever and sealed the elevator trim tab to make GFX fly even better. Both front and back varios have also been checked for calibration accuracy. A small upholstery adjustment was made to the rear seat cushions to better fit the seat pan. Derry is certainly a dab hand on a sewing machine!

The main event in October was the progression of a "behind the scenes" project to restore some dignity to a famous but long forgotten New Zealand glider. Attendees at the Gliding New Zealand 75th Anniversary dinner will recall Simon Gault's excellent address on Doug Yarrall's New Zealand high altitude flight on 10 March 1968, when he climbed to 37,288 feet over Masterton in the Wairarapa wave in his SHK-1 ZK-GFJ. That record remains the New Zealand absolute altitude record all these years later. With the passage of time, its ownership changed. Sadly, it was written off on 10 November 1996 when taking off at New Plymouth Airport. Eventually the damaged glider arrived at Tauranga Airport. Roger Brown and Peter Layne, with much valued assistance from Classic Flyers CEO Andrew Gormlie, have an arrangement in place, when restored to display standard, to give GFJ a deserving home at the Tairawhiti Aviation Museum at Gisborne Airport.

The restoration work plan is in its very early stage of soliciting support. However once that is finalised, the actual restoration work may be spread in several directions to ease the workload.

When GFJ has been completed it will be transported to Gisborne where it will be suspended from the ceiling of the museum's main hangar.

Vintage Kiwi is truly grateful to Colin Alexander of Solo Wings Tauranga, for releasing GFJ on behalf of the estate to Vintage Kiwi and to Andrew Gormlie for approaching the museum in Gisborne. In turn, V.K. is very thankful that the Tairawhiti Aviation Museum committee is particularly keen to have this record making SHK-1 on display once completed.

The only photo of that epic flight is a black and white one taken 57 years ago. Note the undercarriage was not lowered when returning from its epic flight. Frozen or overlooked!

Membership

Membership Display Panel

No membership vario's this month as our vario is just not scaled to show what happens in October as in-active members are resigned off club lists when they don't rejoin or are late to rejoin. So far we have a net -91 for the month and probably a few more to come. This would put our membership altimeter for the calendar year at -57 meaning we would be piloting a submarine, not a glider. Fortunately this situation tends to fix itself over the next month so we should be able to resume service as normal for a final tally for the year in December that hopefully we have a scale for!

Great to see Kaikohe in the far north getting active on Facebook and pushing for new members. They have a great site with the Southern Hemisphere's largest grass field and fantastic convergence flying in summer.

And on the subject of membership, has you club appointed a Chief Welfare Officer yet. Auckland has and here is the explanation from their new CWO.

NOTAMS

Do you know how to check NOTAMS?

NOTAMS provide useful / vital information about airfields that you might have to land at or areas that you might be flying through. You should check these before you fly but many glider pilots do not, simply because they have never been taught how. Ray Burns, CFI of Auckland Aviation Sports has pout together this useful article.

NOTAMS

There are two places you can get them.

Go Preflight is the newest function. It is probably the easiest one to use. You can find it here: https://gopreflight.co.nz/ There is no phone app but if you read down the page it tells you how to use it like an app on your phone. It will display a map and you can click on any aerodrome and it will show you the NOTAMS for that airfield. However, NOTAMS are not just issued for aerodromes. They could apply to areas you might fly through. For example a couple of years ago there were rocket launches over the Kaipara Harbour. That’s a really good thing to know about – you don’t want one of those whizzing past your ears…. Look for the “Area” briefing which will list all the NOTAM for the airfields and “EnRoute” NOTAMS.

IFIS. This has been around a LONG time. Go to ifis.airways.co.nz. You will need to register (as with go-preflight). Look for the “user account” button on the ribbon at the bottom of the screen. On the website look for the briefing option at the top:

The Aerodrome option will allow you to enter a range of airfields. You can save favourites so it is easy to go back to something you might have setup in advance. When you press submit you will get a page that has a format useful for printing. You can get NOTAMS, ATIS, MET and Met reports on a single report. If you are not a paper person then there is also a phone function for IFIS that works very similarly to Go Preflight. You go to the website and then pin the site to your home screen. As with Go-Preflight make sure you review en-route notams for the area in which you plan to fly.

Omarama Airfield Chalet

For Sale

Chalet available to purchase at Omarama Airfield, a rare front row site.

The chalet is on land owned by the Omarama Airfield Ltd, and leased to the Omarama Soaring Centre Inc., which comprises a group of gliding and aviation clubs. The lease terms for the land under the chalet are for 35 years from 1st April 2008, and this expires on 30th March 2043. The ground rental and service fees are charged by the Omarama Soaring Centre, with the level of these currently under review. A buyer will be required to have the lease transferred to them, and abide by its restrictions which notably include the requirement to be an active glider pilot. The buyer will pay the costs of transferring the lease, which will be prepared by the Omarama Soaring Centre.

Inside there is one sunny main room encompassing living, dining, kitchen and bedroom. There is a separate bathroom which was refinished some 10 or so years ago, as was the kitchen, and at the same time the glass door was installed in the back wall.

The chalet has prime position to look out over the airfield and the Benmore mountains to the north, and is reasonably sheltered from the west and to some extent from the east.

The building is believed to have been built around or after 1995. It is constructed of concrete tilt panels with a steel tile roof and single glazed windows. Inside there is a pitched roof which is timber lined. It was extended some 15 years ago to include a separate laundry. There is a tin storage shed placed behind the chalet. There are paved patios at the front and back of the chalet, and a small hedge to the front.

All of the furniture and contents are included in the purchase.

The Omarama Soaring Centre or its spokespeople are not able to offer opinions as to the current condition of the building or what work may be required, other than to comment that it is some 35 years old and has not had recent maintenance as the owner died a few years ago.

The Omarama Soaring Centre is seeking expressions of interest to purchase this building and enter into the lease for the land. Suitable applications will be forwarded to the lawyer acting for the estate of the late owner, and their decision will be final. They may or may not accept any offer, and will not necessarily take the highest.

Please contact morganjones@xtra.co.nz or 027 299 0301 for the full suite of photos, a copy of the existing lease or to arrange access to view the building. Your expression of interest can be sent to the same email address, by the end of October 2025, with final bids request by 15 November 2025.

Rigging Error Found After Duplicate Inspection

From the latest Ops Team Talking

The glider had been landed out and derigged for a trailer retrieve. It had been re-rigged and the

duplicate control checks signed off, but not taped up or flown. A few days later the prospective

pilot noted that, "As it was yet to be taped and I was first to fly this glider, I double checked the

rigging. I found the left aileron's 'quick lock' was incorrectly attached in a half-closed position. It

passed a positive control check, but the latch was not fulling covering the pin and could have come

undone in-flight." See annotated photograph below.

Incident Reports

Incident reports May - September.

  • trainee overshot and came close to runway centreline while joining circuit mid-downwind
  • tow pilot deviated from tow-out track due rain and poor viz - prior to informing ATC
  • pilot descending after wave flight asked ATC for for immediate join due risk of heavy sink
  • aileron connector found to be not fully locked, after rigging and duplicate inspection
  • stall on final approach, heavy landing, broken fuselage - fortunately no injury to pilot

You can access all back copies of the Ops Team Talking newsletters.

These have been placed on the Gliding NZ web site under News > Safety Bulletins A link to the GNZ accident & incident reporting form (OPS 10) can be found in the very top menu bar on the GNZ homepage, just to the right of the 'Classified Adverts'. You can now fill this form out on your phone at the airfield, so no excuses.

OPS 10 link: http://gliding.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/OPS10v7f.pdf

In the case of an accident, asap please phone: 0508 ACCIDENT (0508 222 433)

NOTE: The OPS 10 form has been renamed and amended to include reporting of accidents as well as incidents – previously it was intended for incidents only.
(A CA005 still needs to be sent to CAA for accidents, but the OPS Team doesn’t require a copy of that now.) Consequential changes have been made to the MOAP and AC 2-08.
