GNZ Newsletter October 2025

From the president

Welcome to October

October always feels like the beginning of the soaring season.

Daylight savings has kicked in.

The days really are longer.

The thermals are stronger.

The spring equinoxal winds have arrived.

We've had some nice wave flights down south and up north, as well as some excellent ridge flights, including the first 300km FAI badge flight of the season.

The event calendar gets underway this month and Labour Weekend is always a great way to get in three days of gliding and a sunburn for the unwary.

What will the soaring season bring?

Much success to those who have prepared no doubt.

Nigel Davy

GNZ President

Upcoming Events

Enter now, even if tentative to help the organisers to organise.

MSC Task Week

MSC is hosting a week long, soaring task week in November at Matamata Soaring Centre. This is for pilots that want a week of task flying with others without the formal competition pressure.

This is not intended to be a training course but there will be coaching and pair or group flying. So for those experienced pilots joining us, you may be asked to share your knowledge and experience with newer pilots.

It’s expected that pilots will come with their own glider to fly and be qualified to fly XCP. We will have a couple of dual gliders available if pilots want to share a flight and fly with a cross-country coach.

Weather and task briefing each day at 10:00am with a range of tasks set to suit those pilots entering. We hope to satisfy a range of abilities from short local tasks through to long distance (gold and diamond and above) tasks.

Entry form is open on GNZ Events page or by clicking the link below.

https://msc.gliding.net.nz/events/msc-task-week-nov-2025

Entries are not compulsory, we will take casual day entries, but if you’re travelling and intend to stay at Matamata for the week, then it would be for us to know you’re coming. Also helps us with tow plane planning.

South Island Regionals

South Island Regionals

Omarama – Sat 15th Nov 2025 - Sat 22nd Nov 2025

This is a great opportunity for newer pilots to get a taste of competition flying at one of the worlds best soaring sites. Fly in your own or a club single or scout out an opportunity to get a day or even a whole comp in one of the many twins that will be there. Auckland Gliding Club has their Duo GQQ entered and will be looking to fill seats, Charlie Irvin, Amy Smith and Tuulianna Laukkanen are entered as a team in Twin Astir GOR, 15 year old Ben Sly from Whenuapai will be flying with GNZ President Nigel Davy in Duo GNS. Omarama Gliding Club have twins available, Canterbury have twins that should enter, Kahu Soaring has twins...

Make yourself known to one of these clubs if you want to experience mountain racing in a glider because you might find that all you have to do is ask.

To help inspire you here is an awesome little video by Tobias Read.

Auckland Soaring Competition

Auckland Soaring Competition

NZ National Club Class Competition

Drury – 3rd to 10th Jan 2026

“Two competitions with a difference” – one based loosely on the Competition Enterprise format. The other – Club Class – will be a fully GNZ sanctioned competition using the current GNZ rules.

Auckland Gliding Club’s application to host the NZ Club Class Nationals event was accepted at the last GNZ AGM. The AGC is super excited to offer a premium competition aimed directly to suit those people who enjoy the challenge and real spirit of flying Club Class aircraft.

The annual Auckland Soaring Competition has become a go to for many pilots who want to fly alongside others, challenge themselves and have FUN.

We want all pilots, friends – including partners and family to enjoy these two soaring events – with a difference.

ENTER NOW – GNZ Website

Note – details on fees and costs will be sorted soon – however we want to gauge support for these two competitions in order to organise our support systems and people.

Tuulianna wins the 2025 WeGlide JS Challenge

Congratulations Tuulianna

Tuulianna Laukkanen of the Omarama Gliding Club won this years Jonkers Sailplanes Challenge

The Jonker Sailplanes Challenge is based on the WeGlide Sprint competition for juniors. There are two winners each year. One junior from Europe and one junior from the 'rest of the world'.

As the 'rest of the world' winner Tuulianna receives an invite to the South African Nationals. This competition takes place in Potchefstroom in October. Registration fee, aircraft, tows, and accommodation is paid for by Jonker Sailplanes (JS), travel to and from South Africa and food is her own expense. The award also includes a factory tour of the JS factory and a cross-country flight in a JS glider.

Tuulianna left for South Africa late September and is super excited about this awesome once in a lifetime opportunity. The competition starts on the 3rd and finishes on 11th of October. You can follow her daily results here: https://www.soaringspot.com/en_gb/sanats-2025/results

Tuulianna is flying an LS4 and for good company she will also have New Zealand's World Champion pilot John Coutts flying a Libelle 301.

From Marju and Keith.

We’re very proud of Tuulianna’s achievements. This summer has been a successful one for her. She was the Assistant Director of the Minden Soaring Club and completed her US commercial glider pilot rating. She has been flying rides for the club during the summer.

In May she competed in a competition in Avenol, in Southern California. She also flew cross country flights in her own ASW24 from Minden and was coached by Jim Payne in his Arcus.

She is back to Omarama mid October and looking forward to being a part of the summer crew.

Well done Tuulianna, I think all of GNZ are very proud of you and your considerable achievements. What an amazing learning experience this will be and what an inspiration for other NZ junior pilots.

Discovering the joys of 133.55

a story by Nathanael Melia

This months gliding story

by Nathanael Melia

My first solo ridge day was a revelation for me, but not for the reason I expected. Conditions were perfect for the event, 25kts square on. I had informed Duty’s Charlie and Bob of my desire to go, and Bob gave the green light; Charlie provided a preflight briefing. Preflight briefing, met briefing, etc., is something I was accustomed to from my days in the Oxford University Air Squadron. I certainly appreciated Charlie stepping up the standards of setting expectations and instructions for me to make a flight plan before getting airborne (more of this, please). The Goldilocks ridge conditions provided ample opportunity for me to poke around the different areas and positions with puretrack aiding my situational awareness no end. The surprising revelation was not the absolute blast I had hooning around, not having to worry about where to find lift (that was as amazing as expected), the revelation was 133.55 MHz. FIRST RIDGE SOLO Nathanael Melia Switching from 122.25 filled with the monotone often muffled, so and so is five light years out long finals number 3 runway blah blah blah, I said goodbye to the caravan and onto the hitherto unknown joy of pirate radio 133.55. I listened for a bit, stated my joining point, and that I was northbound… correction, southbound (smart arse bites again). On my cruise to the golf ball, the frequency was alive, with every comment bursting out through smiling faces. Pilots were praising the smoothness of the pressure wave and offering directions on how to find this magic silk carpet. Iggy joyously quipping “tally-ho” to seemingly any call involving XP. Charlie happily mocked anything she passed that she deemed inferior to her beloved DG 101G Elan - NV, “high little pee wee”, “looks alright for a jam jar”. SN was proudly stating position and height 1,500ft above anyone else, playing to the PW5s strength. While the wisdom of Rae saw him bathing in the only bit of sunshine around, chilling out high over Te Aroha (my t-shirt and shorts were another rookie error).

As a student, this is the side of club gliding I had never seen before. Student pilot life is all read all this, recite GNZ’s opinion on this verbatim, say this clipped circuit script on the radio, park the caravan in exactly the predefined invisible box, MY WING! 133.55 Pirate radio is seemingly reserved for joy; everyone a mile above the Waikato, hooning around above the speed limit of the terrestrial plebs, helping each other, shout outs, *waves*, banter, relaxed, with smiles for miles.

So, solo on the ridge, that was my winter goal (my immediate goal is to get up in another westerly and do it all again). For the rest of my first year, my targets are aimed towards XCP, Silver badge, XP, and task flying. I’ve still got a fair few syllabus signatures to collect, but they can wait until the thermals become more reliable for meaningful XC instruction. I note that the days are getting longer (gold star for my PhD in being able to read a calendar) and more consistent westerlies are hopefully around the corner.

Shout out to everyone who passed on their infectious passion, wisdom and help, you know who you are. See you out there, cheers, Nat.

Hall Cherokee II

With the start of the summer gliding season emerging, our K-13 GFX found itself, with winter cobwebs dusted off, on the Piako club’s winch at Matamata Aerodrome in late September.

Meanwhile we can reminisce on what is a classic piece of New Zealand aviation history quietly in retirement in hangar 3 at Classic Flyers at Tauranga Airport.

Back in the late 1950s, three gentlemen in Auckland; Henry Christie, John Williams and Trevor Taylor informed Civil Aviation (C.A.A.) they had acquired a set of plans for a Hall Cherokee II and were going to build one. The response was something like “no you won’t – it hasn’t been done here before and you are not going to start”. Unfazed, the three builder’s persevered with CA.A. who relented providing certain minor adjustments were made, including the position of the tow hook.

The Cherokee was the brainchild of Stanley A Hall, an electronics engineer employed by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in America. He had been gliding since the 1930s.

Construction began in March 1959 in Northcote, Auckland. There were sceptics who looked on with interest. Beverly Secker of Takapuna had the following, published in the March 1960 Gliding Kiwi.

THE THING

Here’s an ode to the boys with the glider

the fantastic “thing” with nothing inside her.

She was put together with swear words and glue,

a few dozen flagons of strong beer too.

The “Thing” as she’s called is hidden from sight

of the prying public – she looks such a fright’

A prehistoric Monster to be let loose at will,

Enough to give Frankenstein a blood curling chill’

But when the day comes to let the “Thing” fly,

John, Trevor and Henry (although they might try)

Will never be able to reach the sky –

For the matter of weight will affect her badly

and when John gets in she’ll disintegrate sadly.

If only he’d been strong enough to diet

Then of course he’d been able to fly it’

But it’s too late now for the GROG has GOT him

and poor old “Cherokee” will just go ROTTEN……..

Registration ZK-GBT was issued on 7 October 1960. The big day finally arrived on 25 November 1961 when the Cherokee had its maiden flight at Ardmore. The test pilot was Neil B Grant, C.F.I. of the Auckland Gliding Club. Auckland club members Ken Bartlett and Roger Barker took ownership in June 1970 with Ken having sole ownership from December 1972. Later it was sold to Pat Driessen. It was eventually withdrawn from use in 1992 and despite all the criticism by C.A.A. and gliding folk in general, it led an uneventful flying career.

After years in storage and as a potential “guy” on a bon fire, Vintage Kiwi president Roger Brown rescued it and handed it to Classic Flyers in 2005 where it has remained displayed ever since.

What must be recognised is that all the subsequent builders (from plans only) of New Zealand amateur aircraft have Messrs Christie, Williams and Taylor to thank for their determination to convince the powers that be, that in the right hands, building aircraft, from plans in New Zealand, was a possibility.

Construction of a second Cherokee, ZK-GCL, was commenced in Hawke’s Bay but was never completed.

Peter Layne (privileged to fly GBT on 2 January 1971).

Membership

Membership Display Panel

Sad face this month. A net loss of 10. Not a total disaster as we had built up a nice buffer in terms of net membership gain since January. The goal of course is to get to the end of the year with a net membership increase. Last year we had some crazy numbers around renewal time with some members being very slow to rejoin. Hopefully this doesn't happen again this year... Summer months and increased club activity always results in gains however so bring on the good weather!

Congratulations to Taupo gliding club who have been working hard and promoting opportunities to learn to soar at their club on Facebook, at club open days and with a glider and pamphlets set up at the local market. What is your club doing to bring in the new members?

Switching from OLC to WeGlide for the Buckland Soaring Award and Air New Zealand XC Trophies

Following the retirement of Online Contest (OLC), Gliding New Zealand is updating the way our awards, the Buckland Soaring Award and the Air New Zealand XC Trophies, are calculated.

For more information on OLC’s retirement, see:

To ensure a smooth transition and continuity for our pilots, both awards will now use WeGlide as their scoring platform.

The main difference is that WeGlide Free Contest uses the 5 best flights, instead of 6.
Also it gives extra points for either the best triangle or the Out & Return that fits within the flight, which can be up to 5 turnpoints.

Buckland Soaring Award

The award will continue to recognise the highest scoring New Zealand resident in the North Island and South Island divisions separately, but it will now be calculated according to the WeGlide Free Contest rules.

On this page https://gliding.co.nz/buckland-soaring-award/ the wording will be updated as follows:

Old wording:

“The Buckland Soaring Award is awarded to the highest scoring New Zealand resident in the New Zealand division of the Online Contest (OLC) for the previous season. OLC handicaps and scoring is used.”

New wording:

"The Buckland Soaring Award is awarded to the highest scoring New Zealand resident in the New Zealand divisions (North Island and South Island separately) of WeGlide, according to the WeGlide Free Contest rules as per https://docs.weglide.org/contests/international/free.html

Air New Zealand XC Trophies

Similarly, scoring for the Air New Zealand XC Trophies will now follow WeGlide rules.

On this page https://gliding.co.nz/air-new-zealand-xc-trophies/ the wording will be updated as follows:

Old wording:

"OLC handicaps and scoring are used."

New wording:

"The WeGlide Free Contest rules are used, as per https://docs.weglide.org/contests/international/free.html "

Everything else will remain the same.

We’ll trial this for the upcoming season, given there’s not much time to decide, and you are all more than welcome to provide feedback, to awards@gliding.co.nz, which will help us decide whether or not we need bespoke customisations from WeGlide for the following sessions.

We encourage all pilots to familiarize themselves with WeGlide and the Free Contest rules (https://docs.weglide.org/contests/international/free.html) to continue participating in these awards with dedication and having fun.
WeGlide being the most user friendly gliding platform currently available should make this transition as smooth as it can be.

FAI Air Sports Medal

Brian Sharpe receives the FAI Air Sport Medal

Before his passing in June of this year Brian Sharpe was nominated for the FAI Air Sport medal. Unfortunately he did not live to find out that he had been awarded the medal so it was presented to the family at a memorial gathering at his favourite winery - Clearview Estate in Hawkes Bay last month. The service was well attended by gliding friends of Brian from around the country. Below is the application that was lodged with the FAI earlier this year.
