Congratulations Grant on a first solo and getting back into gliding after a long time away. Apparently photos of Grant are rare so the pic below is just a space filler until we track Grant down with a camera. We are however just happy that Grant is back in the air and making use of Auckland's ASK21.
Look what's coming...
YGNZ Greytown Minicamp
Youth Glide New Zealand (YGNZ), alongside the Greytown Soaring Centre, is excited to be hosting The George Rogers Memorial – Greytown Mini Camp 2022 during the Labour weekend holiday at Papawai Airfield. To register your interest follow the link below!
The Matamata Soaring Centre (MSC) cross-country course will run over Labour weekend, from Saturday 22nd to Wednesday 26th October. This popular course was cancelled last year due to the Covid lockdown in Auckland, which left some instructors, students and gliders stranded north of the Bombays. 8 entries have already been received so not many places are left!
To all past and present members and friends of Canterbury Gliding Club
You are warmly invited to a celebration for the clubs 75th Anniversary on Saturday October 8th
Please see the attached invitation to a Black Tie dinner to be held at the Ilex Centre in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
Ilex means the holm Oak, this is a beautiful venue (see Ilex Cafe, Christchurch, New Zealand - Neat Places) with opportunities for photos, and parking will be available in the main gardens Armagh Street car park. There will be a guest speaker and dress code is formal
Please forward this invitation widely and note RSVP is essential to this email ([email protected]) by 1st October.

Membership Display Panel
The sink has reduced considerably from last month but unfortunately we are overall down 1 member for the year. With the return of better weather though I'm sure these dials will move more positive again. In the meantime have a think about what your club could be doing to increase its membership.
The Membership Vario (left) displays each month whether GNZ is gaining or losing members - The Membership Altimeter (right) displays on a Year to Date basis. Currently it is saying -1 not +99!
Sailplane Racing
An update from the SRC
Post AGM feedback the Sailplane Racing Committee (SRC) has undertaken to keep GNZ racing pilots up to date with current activities of the committee. So here you go.
On the agenda this month.
* IGC rankings – for the past several years thanks to work done by Christian Derold, NZ SRC sanctioned contests have counted towards pilots attaining a world ranking, so every NZ competition has a world ranking. The SRC is wanting to keep this going so needs funding and somebody to put in the data.
* Glider weighing - important for safety and fairness in competitions. Quotes are being received to progress this.
From the desk of the NAO
GNZ Engineers are now approved to fit and certify the installation of ADSB in gliders
The other week the CAA issued the rule which now allows R rated GNZ engineers to fit and certify ADSB. (until last week we could not fit or certify the installation at all)
The equipment still requires suitable qualified technicians to test and calibrate the ADSB but the work of fitting and certifying the install can now be carried out by a class 3 or 4 ‘R’ rated GNZ engineer.
There has been a monumental effort from a small team at GNZ including Max Stevens and Tim Hughes and Ross Gaddes and they have worked tirelessly with CAA and created an AC (advisory Circular) which details exactly what to fit and how to fit ADSB in a glider.
AC3-19 is on the GNZ Web Site. It’s a good read.
To have a certified ADSB and be able to use it in controlled airspace and be eligible for the CAA rebate you have to comply with what the AC says. What is fitted, how it is fitted and where it is fitted are all in the AC.
Using the correct ADSB GPS antenna.
During the process the GNZ tried to get the CAA to approve the use of the small black TA50 GPS antenna but sadly the CAA refused. In a certified glider you have to fit the larger TA70 (the big white one). The smaller TA50 is not certified and cannot be used in gliders but can be used in microlights. Furthermore the TA70 must be 1.0m or more from a powerful transmitting device aerial such as the Transponder and radio so you may have to relocate some of your existing equipment antennas to ensure a 1.0m gap.

It's that time of the year
Both club and private gliders need some TLC so here's a reminder from Tim on just how to do it.

GNZ Classifieds
Summers coming. Need a new glider or some gear. Don't forget to check out the classifieds section of the GNZ website
Do you need to file an OPS-10 as well as CA005? This question comes up a lot. The CAA must be
notified immediately by phone after an "accident", along with the relevant CFI (MOAP Ref page 61
& 62). A Form CA005 Occurrence Report must then be filed with CAA within ten days.
The view of Gliding NZ is that every incident or accident is also an opportunity to learn something
that could prevent a similar occurrence in the future, and for this reason an OPS-10 report should
also be filed with the ROO even though this is not explicitly requested in AC 2-08.
A link to the GNZ incident reporting form (OPS 10) can be found in the very top menu bar on the GNZ homepage, just to the right of the 'Classified Adverts'. You can now fill this form out on your phone at the airfield so no excuses.
